Hi all,
I have been on 15mgs of prednisolone for just over a week and wonder whether anyone else had abdo pain, upset tummy and wind +++++!! when they started? I think it is getting a bit better and I tend to be prone to tummy side effects. I am on omeprazole, but wondered if this is a common side effect, or a coincidence?
I don't think it is bad enough to stop the drug - there is no way I'm giving up pain free days, but if it is probably not prednisolone I suppose I should try and find out what is causing it!

thankyou
Alison xx

Dear Alison,

Having not been on oral steroids I do not know but here are the minor side effects of pred.;

Minor

* stretch marks
* nervousness
* acne
* rash
* increased appetite
* hyperactivity
* frequent urination
* diarrhea
* removes intestinal flora
* leg pain/cramps
* sensitive teeth

Have you ever tried Slippery elm powder for upset tums? It is a herb and is just magical!

The powder is purer than the capsules but it does taste terrible!I mix with a little milk.

Love,

Amanda

Hi Alison, I know what you mean about the pred. I was only on 5mg a day for a month and my stomach was quite painful at times. Other times I just felt bloated and uncomfortable all the time I was on them. I thinks it's one of those things where we all react differently. I asked for the depo medrone jab last time I was struggling as I don't get the horrible bloated feeling with the injections. They can only be used every few months though so prob wouldn't help long term, I'm not really sure.

Thankyou both for your useful comments - sounds like it is the prednisolone, which is better than another random symptom, especially as it is only short term. However, will get some slippery elm - sounds like a useful one to have around.

many thanks,
love Alison

Hi Alison, I suffer from colitis as well and when that flairs up the treatment is prednisolone. Recently I was on 30mg daily, usual dose 7.5 mg, I told my GP that I was getting really bad stomach pain etc, and he told me it was an affect of the steroid. When I started to come down the pain went as quickly as it came.

Hi,

Had exactly the same trouble and had to go to the doctor to get a stomach protector the one I found the best was Mebeverine which I take about 30 minutes before a meal and it certainly helps. If I forget I really know about it. I am taking 6mg a day of Prednisolone and am trying to get the dosage down. I am afraid the wind problem is still there but at least it doesn't hurt!

Hopefully you will find something to suit you but do speak to your doctor.

Alison,

Please make sure that your GP prescribes 'Enteric Coated' Prednisolone. These coated pills help to alleviate the stomach problems Pred can cause. I certainly haven't had any problems once I switched to 'Enteric Coated' Pred.

Hi Alison, I started on 30mg pred on Friday, only problem so far is a little upset tummy, but otherwise fine. I suppose we are all different, and maybe after a little longer my luck will change via side effects. At the moment I am thrilled by the results of it. Cant believe that I am not getting so much pain. Shame its only temporary.Smile

Hiya,

Well, no doubt about it, it's the prednisolone! Amazing not to have any pain and I can move, but now can't go out 'cos I have to stay near a loo!! Still I'm definitely putting up with it. I'm seeing GP for next prescription tomorrow as I need to start coming down and will ask for enteric coated - that may do the trick. Never had tummy problems with depo or solu medrone,but have done with every other oral drug I've been on!

Thanks for reassuring me this is normal!

all best
Alison
